How To SWOT Your Holistic Resolutions and Life Goals

Have you made resolutions and set holistic goals for the next year? Great. But without SWOT they will not work. What can you do?

Before You Begin

The topic of working on goals is huge and it will be described in many posts on this website. You can also find many articles about goals and SWOT online.

But wait. They will not tell you about these important things written below to consider before even starting SWOT. Answer these questions in writing:

1. Will this goal make me happy?

Define what happiness means to you - in all the dimensions: body, mind, heart, and soul. Only then you will be fully sure that your goal brings you closer to ultimate happiness.

You have already defined your move-towards life values. What goals can you achieve to enjoy friendship, a happy family life, good health, or peace of mind? Write your life values once again and create goals for them.

2. Does it observe the values of Light?

However, you need to remember one important thing: your goals must follow the values of the light or avoid the values of the darkness 9which are opposite to the light - anger, hater, envy, jealousy, war egoism etc.)

Remember that only the goals based on the values of light will bring real prosperity to your life because you are creating positive karma then. So, if you set a goal based on friendship and love, you will receive friendship and love in return.

3. Is this goal in congruence with my other goals?

For example, you cannot go on holiday more often saving money at the same time. or your work overshading your relationships.

Also, you cannot be grey, it is either or white or black perspective. I mean the goals according to the values of light and at the same time, the values of darkness. Let's say that you want to make it honestly but at the same time, do not exclude some dodgy schemes. Or telling the truth but lying sometimes.

Select each goal/resolution separately and check, answering the above questions. What are the conclusions?

Why It Is Important to Do the SWOT?

Now, let's write about SWOT. Planning without a strategy is like walking in a haze trying to find your destination. You need smart resolutions and a smart way of working on them, otherwise, your motivation will plummet very quickly.

I know that this post was published after Jan 1st. I have done it deliberately so that you have a couple of days to test your goals/resolutions and you will be able to conduct the proper analysis shortly.

How To Prepare the Right Strategy

Just use the SWOT technique for each goal/resolution you have made for this year. Do the analysis in writing so that you can check your progress later and have it as a guide.


Answer the following questions to find your strengths:

  • What resources necessary for accomplishing this goal do you have? Money? Helpful people? Skills?

  • What kind of experience will help you to achieve this goal do you have?

  • What are you good at personally?

  • What skills which help you to get the necessary resources do you have?


Now the time has come to define your weaknesses. Again, answer the questions below:

  • What skills necessary for the achievement of this goal do you lack?

  • What resources do you lack? money? helpful people?

  • What are your personal challenges to working on your goals (e.g., lack of self-discipline, low motivation after a while)?

  • What is not your strength while achieving your goals (e.g., dealing with people)


Now list everything that can be a danger on the way to your goal:

  • External factors (economy, natural disasters, lack of funds, unexpected events)

  • Your personal unexpected issues (e.g., health and financial situation deterioration)

  • People around you who may deteriorate your endeavours

  • Personal challenges (temptations)


Finally, list what good luck may bring you:

  • Helpful people

  • Auspicious external events

  • Unexpected resources that can help you to achieve this goal

Analysis And Updates

Once you have finished your SWOT, the time has come to analyse the information you have gathered. In order to succeed, you need to maximise your strengths and minimise your threats. Therefore, ask another couple of questions:

  • What can I do to make the most of my strengths? Look at each strength listed in your analysis and think about how you can use more than now, and how to make it even stronger.

  • What resources can I use to minimise threats? they are beyond your control, but you definitely have tools to minimise them.

  • What is my Plan B? Sometimes you must modify your goal in the case of unexpected challenges.

It can often happen that after the SWOT analysis, you need to update your goal so that it will be realistic. It happens because now you have found all the pitfalls to avoid or minimise. You can come to the following conclusions after SWOT

  • My goal/resolution is too difficult. I do not have enough strengths

  • My goal/resolution is too risky.

  • I do not have enough skills and resources to pursue it.

  • I have taken too much at a time. My goal/resolution is too complex.

In each case, modify the goal or resolution, focusing on polishing your strengths, maximising opportunities, and minimising threats.
